  • A photo has been shared repeatedly on Facebook alongside a claim that it shows a Thai YouTube influencer Pimrypie giving out cash to those who comment in the post and claim the money via Line messenger app. The claim is false; the photo is an old, unrelated picture and Pimrypie told AFP that the claim is fake news. The photo was shared here on Facebook on January 15, 2021. The photo shows Pimrypie wearing a black hat carrying a tray stacked with banknotes, while another woman looks at them. A shop with gold under the counter can be seen in the background. Today Pimrypie is going to give out money worth 20,000,000 Thai Baht (667,000 US dollars), the Thai-language caption reads. On January 9 2021, she announced on Facebook that she had donated 500,000 Thai Baht (16,600 US dollars) for the development of a village in the northern Om Koi district . The video that showed her donating solar panels, planting a vegetable garden, and handing out shoes to children in the village was posted on her channel on January 7, 2021, ahead of Thailand’s National Children’s Day, Khaosod English reported here . While Pimrypie was praised for her actions, the video also sparked criticism, with some branding her project a band-aid solution , the Bangkok Post reported. The same image, along with a similar claim, was also shared on Facebook here , here , and here . However, the claim is false. The photo originally appeared in various media reports in January 2020. A reverse image search on Google found the photo published in this report by a local Thai media Khaosod on January 29, 2020.
