  • A video shows the last moments of the Ethiopian Airlines flight that crashed killing 157 people. Incorrect. It’s a video from 2016 of an Etihad flight that experienced severe turbulence but went on to land safely. A video claiming to show the final moments of the Ethiopian Airlines flight from Addis Ababa to Nairobi which crashed earlier this month, tragically killing all 157 people on board, has been shared on Facebook. But the video isn’t what it claims to be. The footage was actually taken three years ago on an Etihad flight from Abu Dhabi to Jakarta and shows passengers experiencing severe turbulence. It was posted to Facebook by a passenger on that flight and on Indonesian citizen journalist platform, NET Citizen Journalist (and their names are on several versions of the video). The Etihad flight went on to land safely. This article is part of our work fact checking potentially false pictures, videos and stories on Facebook. You can read more about this—and find out how to report Facebook content—here. For the purposes of that scheme, we’ve rated this claim as false because the video is not of the Ethiopian Airlines crash but of another flight experiencing severe turbulence which went on to land safely.
