A video has been viewed thousands of times in December 2021 alongside a claim it shows a burqa-clad woman firing a gun in Karachi, the largest city in Muslim-majority Pakistan. The video has been shared in a misleading context; it has circulated in reports since November 2020 about a woman firing shots at a shop in Hindu-majority India. The video was shared here on Facebook on December 11, 2021. It has been viewed more than 4,000 times. This is Karachi my dear, reads the post's Urdu-language caption. The video shows a woman in a burqa -- a traditional Islamic head-to-toe garment -- shouting abuse in a narrow street. At the 17-second mark, she can be seen pointing what appears to be a gun at a door before gunshots are heard. Seconds later, she gets on a motorbike before the clip ends. I'm Nasir's sister, she says towards the end of the video. Screenshot of the misleading post. Taken on January 4, 2022. The video circulated online in Muslim-majority Pakistan, where conservative dress for women is commonplace. Comments from some social media users indicated they believed the video shows an incident in Karachi. One wrote in Urdu: Great swearing...that is indeed the beauty of Karachi. Another commented in English: This is Karachi, weldone [sic]. The footage was shared alongside a similar claim that it was filmed in Karachi here , here , here and here on Facebook; and here and here on Twitter. The video was posted on YouTube in a report by Indian media outlet Times Now on November 24, 2020. The report's headline reads: Shocking: Woman in burqa fires at a shop after a tiff over phone in Delhi. A burqa-clad woman can be seen firing multiple shots at a grocery store. And this happened in northeast Delhi, the anchor in the report says. Below is a screenshot comparison of the video in the misleading posts (L) and the report by Times Now (R): Screenshot comparison Local media outlet India Today also reported on the incident on November 24, 2020. In the video...she can be heard saying she is the sister of a gangster named Nasir. Police have said the woman has been identified as Nusrat, the report reads.
