  • An old clip of Indian opposition politician Arvind Kejriwal has been misleadingly edited to make it appear as if he is threatening voters in the western state of Gujarat. The clip was repeatedly shared on Facebook and Twitter ahead of state polls in Gujarat where Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party is aiming to oust the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. The clip was in fact taken from a 2016 speech in which Kejriwal made allegations about how a BJP official would run the state. The 11-second clip was shared here on Facebook on November 5, 2022. It appears to show Arvind Kejriwal, the current chief minister of India's capital Delhi, saying in Hindi: If you protest against me, I will crush you. And people of Gujarat , I dare you to go against me. Kejriwal is also the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which according to local media is aiming to wrest control of Gujarat from the ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in polls set for December . The video's Hindi-language caption reads: People of Gujarat I hope you have not forgotten, Kejriwal challenged you saying... 'If you go against me, I will crush you. Do whatever you can to me’. So now is the time to answer him. A screenshot of the misleading post captured on November 22, 2022 Similar clips were also shared here and here on Facebook; and here and here on Twitter. The clip s, however, have been misleadingly edited. Old speech A keyword search on Google found a longer video of Kejriwal's speech posted on the YouTube channel of local news organisation Mango News on October 19, 2016. The title of the 18-minute video reads, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal Full Speech At Surat Rally | Gujarat | Mango News. According to the video's description, Kejriwal delivered the speech while he was campaigning for his party in Gujarat's Surat city before the 2017 state elections . The clip shared in the misleading posts corresponds to a section that begins at the Mango News video's 10:01 mark. AAP also posted Kejriwal's full speech on its official YouTube channel here on October 18, 2016 . An analysis of the full speech found the misleading posts had omitted a sentence where Kejriwal criticises a BJP official. He said: Amit Shah is warning people, challenging the whole Gujarat state that I will rule Gujarat like this. If you protest against me, I will crush you. And people of Gujarat, I dare you to go against me. Amit Shah is India's current home minister. At the time of Kejriwal's speech, he was president of the BJP.
