A poster appearing to advertise jobs at Uganda’s Nile Breweries was shared on Facebook on 10 February 2022. According to the poster, 2,413 new job opportunities are available at the company, including for student interns, graduate trainees, office secretaries, data entry clerks, technical support staff and sales representatives. Interested applicants are warned they are required to apply for a single position only and multiple applications shall lead to automatic disqualification The ad tells job seekers to send their CV and cover letter to an Outlook email address and forward the same to a Gmail address, which is unusual for a large corporation or genuine recruitment drive. But is this job ad genuine? We checked. Signs of a scam One email address on the Nile Breweries website’s contact page ends ug.sabmiller.com. We would expect all emails at the company to follow the same format, unlike the emails listed in the ad. (Note: Nile Breweries was part of SABMiller but is now owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev, known as AB InBev, after AB InBev bought SABMiller in 2016.) We could not find the poster or the job vacancies listed on it on the career section of the company’s website . These were signs that the ad was a scam – for more on Facebook scams and how to spot them, read our guide . On 9 February Nile Breweries confirmed our suspicions on their official Twitter account. The company shared the fake ad and tweeted : We have been notified of a fake poster circulating around, announcing job vacancies in our name. Please treat this with contempt.
