  • Latsa nan don karanta wannan rohoton da Hausa. Click here to read this report in Hausa. Two photos posted on Facebook on 22 October 2020 show a man with what seems to be a pickaxe digging up a tarred road as a group of other men watch. Masu Zanga-Zangar #EndSARS Sun Fara Farfasa Sabbin Tituna Da Gwamnatin Tarayya Ta Yi A Kudancin Najeriya, the caption reads in Hausa. This roughly translates as: #EndSARS protesters have started destroying roads built by the federal government in southern Nigeria. Protests against police brutality – labelled #EndSARS in reference to the special anti-robbery squad – have spread across Nigeria since early October. But does the photo show #EndSARS protesters digging up a road in southern Nigeria? We checked. Photo used in another false claim A Google reverse image reveals that the photo was published in a 23 September article in the Citizen , a South African newspaper. Mayor blames Eskom after protesters dig up road over lack of electricity, water, the headline reads. The article reports that members of the eBhovini community in KwaZulu-Natal province had dug up the R33 route during a service delivery protest. One of the photos also appears on a News24 report on the incident. In both articles , the photos are credited to Yusuf Ambramjee on Twitter. Abramjee, who describes himself as a social cohesion advocate, posted the photos on 22 September. He tweeted : eBhovini, between Pomeroy and Dundee KZN. Protestors are damaging the road - demanding service delivery. eBhovini, between Pomeroy and Dundee KZN. And one of the photos has also been used in a false claim that it shows supporters of an arrested Kenyan politician.
