  • A job advert posted on Facebook on 11 March 2020 claims that Carrefour Kenya has some new job opportunities. The post reads, Our client New European chain of Supermarkets which was recently opened at two Rivers Mall Carrefour is expanding its market in Kenya by opening a new branch... Due to this, we are recruiting staff to fill various positions. A similar post appeared on another Facebook page on 2 March 2020 The vacant job positions include floor attendants, cashiers, accountants, secretaries, customer care receptionists, cleaners, guards, bakers, chefs, gardeners, supervisors, storekeepers . Applicants are promised salaries that begin from KSh29,000. It links to a webpage where applicants are asked to pay KSh350 via mobile money, by sending KSh390 to a Miss Anita (chief funding officer), whose mobile phone number is given as 0704 250 146. Africa Check found that the phone number is registered to Anita Jepkiru as per the mobile money app. It’s not a thing of you paying us. We want you to prove to us that you’re actually willing to take up this job and you are indeed in need of employment, the ad notes . NOTE: ONLY APPLICANTS WHO HAVE PAID REGISTRATION FEE WILL BE CONSIDERED. The call for money from prospective applicants in job adverts is a red flag that signals a scam. So is this a fake job ad put out by fraudulent people? We checked. Carrefour’ response Africa Check contacted Carrefour to find out if the circulating job ad was genuine. Carrefour dismissed these reports stating that they are not currently hiring. Carrefour’s response reads, Disregard the claim for that is a scam. We are not hiring. Please note that Carrefour Kenya does not charge for short-listings, interview or any other stage of the recruitment process, Carrefour told Africa Check.– Grace Gichuhi. (en)
