  • Fake AOC ‘Electric Cars’ Tweet Resurfaced in Hurricane Ian Discourse Claim Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) tweeted that hurricane-related gas lines would not be a problem if more people drove electric cars. Rating Not True Like this fact check? Reporting On September 26 2022, as Hurricane Ian entered the news cycle, screenshots of a tweet attributed to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) about gas station lines and electric cars circulated — again: pic.twitter.com/JzsnKOcPWF — MAGA PATRIOT David (@DavidKotiw) September 27, 2022 Text of the tweet (dated 30/08/2019) followed a familiar template — in which Rep. Ocasio-Cortez purportedly proposed that charging electrical vehicles would be easier than simply getting gas in the event of a long power outage: I see people are rushing out to fill up their cars for this hurricane at the gas station This wouldn’t be an issue if they had electric cars. If the power is out for a week how are they going to get gas? We need to start planning ahead and moving forward Florida is where wokes go to die... Please enable JavaScript Florida is where wokes go to die Several iterations were shared to Twitter, all with identical screenshots. Many included predictably angry commentary : If power is out for a week how are you going to charge that electric car? 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇 You aoc never cease to amaze me in your Stupidity! Duh, Electric cars need electric to run, NO POWER from storm, NO charging electric car!!!!! Go back to dancing on bar tops Apparently AOC believes electric cars run on skittles and unicorn farts. I see AOC is still saying stupid stuff like this post where she shame people who can’t afford electric cars. That wouldn’t be an issue if she only had a brain. She need to start planning ahead, maybe pay someone to think for her. Occasionally, commenters asserted that Ocasio-Cortez made the comments in relation to Hurricane Ian in September 2022, despite a visible date on the screenshot: AOC says electric cars would solve problems in Ian evacuation because you wouldn't need gas. So lithium batteries don't lose power while sitting in traffic? — RotterdamNole (@nynole55) September 27, 2022 Oh hi @RepAOC @AOC saw your earlier tweet about why electric cars are better during a hurricane. Sending a little knowledge your way. Also, if the electricity goes out no one can charge their car... stop the rhetoric! #WakeUpAmerica https://t.co/OYiJwR4IKu — Kitty Qat (@KittyCa18601486) September 27, 2022 Preposterous and otherwise bombastic fabricated quotes attributed to Rep. Ocasio-Cortez were common on social media. Previous examples include debunked claims that she said that former U.S. President Donald Trump only kept his promises to win re-election, that if owning guns was a right it would be in the Constitution, that it was possible to land on the sun if you go at night, that all the technology in the world wouldn’t enable people to build a wall in the mountains, and more broadly that she forgot to vote on her own bill. Much of the disinformation around Ocasio-Cortez seems geared toward making her appear thoughtless or ignorant. As for the purported tweet about electric cars and hurricane-related gas lines, PolitiFact examined the claim in September 2019, tracing it back to far-right disinformation purveyor Sebastian Gorka: The image has been around at least since Aug. 31 [2019], when Sebastian Gorka, a former official in President Donald Trump’s administration, asked on Twitter if Ocasio-Cortez really tweeted that. Nope, Ocasio-Cortez replied. Searching through her recent tweets, we saw nothing like the image in the Facebook post. We also didn’t see it on Politwoops, which tracks deleted tweets by public officials. We rate this Facebook post False. On September 26 2022, a tweet about hurricanes and electric cars was again attributed to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) on Twitter. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez was frequently the target of outlandish fabricated quote memes and tweets, falsehoods almost always structured to contain an extremely obvious (yet always clearly articulated) logical flaw. The tweet originally circulated and was debunked in September 2019.
