  • On 20 October 2019, Kenya held Mashujaa Day celebrations at Mama Ngina Waterfront park in Mombasa, with members of the defence forces entertaining the crowd. Mashujaa Day – Kiswahili for Heroes’ Day – honours those who fought for Kenya’s independence from Britain. The event was broadcast on TV, radio and social media. But not all the photos and videos shared on social media were of the actual event. A Facebook user shared a video with the claim it showed Kenyan army units doing motorbike stunts at the event. If you missed the Mashujaa celebration and drills....this is how things zilikuwa kwa ground. Usicheze na army, he captioned video. The Kiswahili translates as: This is how things were on the ground. Don’t mess with the army. Video shows Indian army But the army didn’t perform any motorbike stunts at the Mombasa celebrations. A reverse image search of a screenshot from the video hints that the stunts were performed by the Indian army. And fuller version of the video on YouTube shows the flag of India as well as other flags used by units of the Indian army. A YouTube search for Indian army bike stunts brings up of dozens of videos showing the Indian army performing bike stunts during national celebrations. And photos of the army doing the stunts – and showing the same flags seen in the Facebook video – can be seen on stock photo site Getty Images . – Dancan Bwire (en)
