  • A video showing Indian politician Mamata Banerjee reciting an Islamic prayer has been widely shared on social media, including by India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which accused Banerjee of appeasement politics. However, the claim is misleading; the video was clipped from a speech Banerjee gave in January 2018 in which she recited Hindu, Christian, Sikh and Islamic prayers. The 12-second clip was shared here on the BJP's official Twitter accound for West Bengal on January 23, 2021. If CM Mamata Banerjee can recite an Islamic prayer at a West Bengal government event, why does she have a problem being greeted with Jai Shree Ram? Appeasement? She disgraced Bengal and insulted Netaji’s legacy by her conduct at the event to commemorate Netaji’s anniversary, the tweet reads. The post circulated after Banerjee , who is the chief minister of the eastern Indian state of West Bengal , refused to speak at an event honoring Indian independence leader Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose after BJP supporters interrupted her with pro-Hindu slogans, as The Indian Express reported on January 24, 2021. The clip, which is from a 2018 broadcast by local TV network CN News , features a Bengali-language chyron that translates as: 500,000 families will be given houses under government schemes. The clip was also shared alongside the same claim on Facebook here , here and here . However, the claim is misleading. A reverse image search on Google with video keyframes found that Banerjee’s full speech was uploaded here on the official YouTube channel of her political party, the All India Trinamool Congress, on January 2, 2018. Bengal CM inaugurates Mati Utsav 2018 in Mati Tirtha-Krishi Katha, Purba Burdwan, the title of the video reads. Maati Utsav is a programme initiated by Banerjee marking the growth of the agricultural sector in the state. In the video, Banerjee invokes multi-faith prayers in Bengali. At the 21:32 mark, she begins by reciting a hymn for Hindu Goddess Durga , followed by an Islamic, Christian and Sikh prayer.
