  • A video has been viewed millions of times on social media platforms alongside a claim it shows two thieves foiling an armed robber's attempt to raid a convenience store. The claim is false: the footage is actually an advert for a 2018 US teen drama web series. The video was published here on Twitter on June 21, 2021. It has been viewed more than 88,100 times. A screenshot, taken on June 24, 2021, of the misleading post. The video purports to show CCTV footage from inside a store. It appears to show two people attempting to steal items from the shelves. Another person then enters the shop and appears to point a weapon at the shopkeeper. But moments later, the would-be robber is tackled to the ground by the two purported shoplifters. The post’s caption reads: The Bad Guys take out tge Badfer Guy! (sic). Comments on the post indicated many social media users believed the clip shows a genuine crime incident. A Twitter user commented: They simply wanted to escape ) (sic). Another wrote: True Hero’s (sic). A screenshot of a selection of comments, taken on June 29. 2021, under the misleading tweet. The same video was shared in multiple news reports, including by the Times of India here and South Africa newspaper The Citizen here . The same video was also shared in Chinese and English posts alongside a similar claim on Chinese video-sharing website Bilibili here ; on Chinese online portals Tencent here and Sina here. It was also shared alongside a similar claim on YouTube here ; on Facebook here ; on Twitter here ; on Reddit here ; and on Dailymotion here . The claim is, however, false. A reverse image search on Google found the original footage on Facebook here. It is a promotional video for American teen drama web series Five Points . It was posted on February 9, 2018, several months before the first season of the series premiered on Facebook. The caption reads: Craziest convenience store footage you’ve ever seen! Watch till the end. Five Points High troublemaker CJ saves the day. CJ refers to one of the characters in the drama series, Cameron 'CJ' Jin, played by Raymond Cham Jr. The Five Points show features life-changing events from five high school students from Chicago, according to its IMDb description .
