  • A video has been shared more than a thousand times in Indian social media posts that misleadingly claim it shows criticism recently levelled at Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Uma Bharti -- deputy leader of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The video was filmed years before Modi was sworn in as prime minister. At the time, he was the chief minister of the Gujarat state. Listen to what firebrand Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sadhvi Uma Bharti is saying about the prime minister of the country, reads in part the Hindi-language caption of a video shared on Twitter here on December 13, 2022. I strongly condemn this, how can someone call the prime minister a 'man of destruction'? Bharti is a deputy leader of the BJP who has held ministerial positions in Modi's administration. The 2:06-long clip, which appears to show Bharti speaking to the press, has been viewed more than 39,000 times and shared over 1,500 times. Bharti says in the video: I know Narendra Modi very well. Narendra Modi is not a man of development but a man of destruction, he has destroyed Gujarat. There has been no development in Gujarat, but the law and order situation has worsened. Modi's image has been made so great by the media, now it has to show its truth as well. Hindi-language text superimposed on the video reads: OMG .. what is Uma Bharti saying. Screenshot of the misleading tweet, captured on December 15, 2022 The clip was also shared with the same claim on Twitter here , and on Facebook here and here . Comments from several users suggested they were misled by the claim. One user wrote: Is she taking a risk with her life? ? She should be careful! Another said: The truth comes out at some time or other. You have told the truth. Modi has ruined the country. The claim, however, is misleading. The clip was not recent -- it started to circulate as early as 2011 when Modi was the chief minister of the Indian state of Gujarat before becoming prime minister. Old video A keyword search on Google led to a longer version of the clip on YouTube here uploaded on July 27, 2011. The video was titled Uma Bharti Exposed Narendra Modi and showed Bharti criticising Modi. The clip used in misleading social media posts corresponded with the section that began at the 1:18 mark of the YouTube video. Below is a screenshot comparison of the video in the misleading tweet (left) and the video uploaded to YouTube in 2011 (right): Screenshot comparison of the video in the misleading tweet (left) and the video uploaded to YouTube in 2011 (right). The video can also be seen in a news report uploaded by the Hindi-language channel ABP News to its YouTube channel on April 17, 2014 -- which reported on the Indian National Congress' release of the video during India's general elections in 2014. The Congress party -- often referred to simply as Congress -- was the ruling party at the time. Amidst the war of worlds between political parties, Congress today released a video clip in which senior BJP leader Uma Bharti was seen launching a blistering attack at PM candidate of her party Narendra Modi, read the video's description. A report published on the same day by another Indian broadcaster NDTV said that Bharti had filed a complaint with the Election Commission over the video's release. She told NDTV that she made the comments after she was expelled from the BJP in 2005, and that Even America has changed its mind about Modi. Bharti returned to the party in 2011. Subsequent keyword searches on Google led to news reports that indicated Bharti made the comments in 2007. According to a report from November 2007 in the English-language India Today news magazine, they were made ahead of state polls in Gujarat where the opposition hoped to oust Modi as chief minister. Bharti was asked about her comments during a show on India TV in July 2015. A clip of the segment from the show Aap Ki Adalat was uploaded to India TV's verified YouTube channel here . In the video, Bharti told the host that she was not a BJP member when she made the comments in 2007; she said she changed her mind after touring the state and seeing the development there. Bharti complained about the media defaming her by replaying the old statement. (en)
