  • When the Trump administration announced it would be imposing tariffs on more than 1300 products imported from China in April 2018, some were interested to discover that clothing items had been spared. One explanation for this exemption proposed by a number of outlets was that President Trump had made a nepotistic decision to specifically benefit his daughter Ivanka Trump's company: The claim that Ivanka Trump's clothing line was spared from these tariffs is based on the fact that clothing items were not included on the list of some 1,300 products that will be subjected to these tariffs. Although this means that Ivanka Trump's brand will not have pay extra for clothing items imported from China, many of these stories omit the fact that no clothing company will: The Office of the United States Trade Representative further explained how some 1,300 products were chosen for the tariffs: Trump's critics may claim that clothing items were excluded from these tariffs for nepotistic reasons, but the Office of the United States Trade Representative explanation does hold water. Imposing tariffs on clothing items from China would have a large effect on United States consumers. In 2016, for instance, 35 percent of all apparel imported into the United States came from China.
