  • A video has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times in multiple social media posts alongside a misleading claim that it shows a border clash between Chinese and Indian soldiers in December 2022. In fact, the clip has circulated in Indian media reports since at least June 2020, purportedly showing another clash between Chinese and Indian troops on their disputed frontier. The video -- which shows a clash between two groups of soldiers -- was posted on Twitter on December 14, 2022. It has been viewed more than 120,000 times. The traditional Chinese caption reads: Group fights on the Sino-Indian border! 300 [people] from China, and 150 from India. In the end, 100 on the Chinese side were injured, and 12 were captured. The number of injuries on the Indian side is under 20! Isn't this too humiliating? A screenshot, taken on December 14, 2022, of the misleading post. The video surfaced online shortly after Chinese and Indian troops clashed at the border in the northeastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh on December 9, 2022, leaving troops on both sides injured. The Chinese military said Indian troops crossed the border illegally and obstructed Chinese border patrol troops. India's defence minister Rajnath Singh in turn accused the Chinese soldiers of trying to unilaterally change the status quo at the border. It was thought to be the most serious battle on the nuclear-armed Asian giants' disputed frontier since 2020, when 20 Indian troops and four Chinese soldiers died in brawling, AFP reported . The video was shared on Twitter , Facebook , and Gettr alongside a similar false claim in both Chinese and English. However, the video has been circulating in Indian media reports since at least June 2020. Border clash A combination of reverse image and keyword searches on Google found a similar video published as part of a news report by an Indian news outlet NDTV on June 23, 2020. Video Shows High Altitude Clash Between Indian, China Soldiers In Sikkim, the NDTV's news report read, referring to a state in northeast India. Indian and Chinese officers are seen clashing in a video of a high-altitude skirmish in Sikkim that has emerged days after the deadly face-off at Ladakh, NDTV reported. Indian and Chinese soldiers are seen shoving each other and arguing. 'Go back' and 'don't fight' shout soldiers from both sides. Below is a screenshot comparison of the video in the misleading posts (left) and the NDTV news report on YouTube (right): A screenshot comparison of the video in the misleading post (left) and the NDTV news report (right). NDTV reported that the video of the skirmish in Sikkim emerged online days after the deadly face-off at Ladakh on the disputed Himalayan border. AFP reported on the June 15 clash in Ladakh here, saying it was the first time troops had been killed on the frontier between the two Asian giants since 1975, marking a major deterioration in ties between them. The same video of the purported skirmish in Sikkim was also aired by the news outlet India Today, which only reported that it shows a clash at the border between Indian and Chinese troops in 2020 but gave no specific timeframe for it. AFP has previously debunked false and misleading claims about the border dispute between China and India here , here and here . (en)
