  • A Facebook post shared 71,000 times warns users in Rolla, Missouri of unknown males leaving money on women’s car door handles laced with an incapacitating substance, rendering drivers vulnerable to abduction. But city police say they have no evidence this tactic is being used, and the post is similar to previous debunked claims of money being left with nefarious intent. On 06-16-21 in Rolla, MO 2 separate incidents occurred. 1 at Walmart, 1 at Academy Sports. Dollar bills were in the door handles of cars occupied by single females. DO NOT touch it. After touching you will begin to feel sick and eventually pull over. This is when you are approached by unknown males who will attempt to kidnap you, the June 17, 2021 post reads. Screenshot of a Facebook post taken on June 22, 2021 But the post does not describe a legitimate threat, Rolla police said. Captain Hank Harper told AFP: We have not received any reports of anybody having money left on their cars, or anything related to that post. He said the police department has no evidence to suggest that this abduction tactic is being used or has ever been used in Rolla, and that no related police reports have been filed in the city. The department also posted a Facebook statement on June 17 clarifying to citizens that the social media post was not cause for concern. Walmart and Academy Sports did not reply to requests for comment. AFP Fact Check has debunked similar local posts that claim a kidnapping threat where none was present here and here . (en)
