  • A video has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times in multiple Facebook posts that claim it shows a food fight at a market in Singapore in April 2019. The claim is false; the video has circulated online since at least June 2018 in connection with an incident in China; the market in Singapore was closed for renovation at the time of the purported incident. The video was shared in a Facebook post here on April 28, 2019, where it has been viewed more than 650,000 times and shared more than 10,000 times. Blk 409 Ang Mo Kio is a reference to the 409 AMK Market and Food Centre in the town of Ang Mo Kio in Singapore. Here is the market on Google Maps. The video was also shared in other Facebook posts here and here with a similar claim. But the claim is false; the video has circulated online since at least June 2018 in connection with an incident in China. AFP conducted a reverse image search on Google using keyframes from the video. The search found this example of the full video on Chinese video streaming website Tencent published on June 4, 2018. The Chinese language caption on the Tencent video translates to English as: People are fighting in the vegetable market. AFP also located this example of the video from the misleading Facebook posts published on YouTube on June 5, 2018. The 409 AMK Market and Food Centre in Singapore is closed for renovation between April 1, 2019 and May 31, 2019, according to this announcement on the website for the Singapore’s National Environmental Agency.
