  • The Facebook group Fresh jobs for 2020 has more than 170,000 members. As the name suggests, it advertises opportunities for employment. Many people use social media as a way to look for jobs, but there’s more to this group than meets the eye. Created in March 2020 , Fresh jobs for 2020 is run by 22 admins and moderators in South Africa. These people regularly share ads for jobs at different companies operating in the country – Coca-Cola , Transnet , Sasol , and Pick n Pay . Some job ads require a grade 10 or 12 qualification , while others require no experience at all. Salaries range from R8,000 to R15,000 a month. Sounds too good to be true? That’s because it is. Money from ads Each post includes a link that can supposedly be used to apply for a job online but these are all dead ends. Instead of being taken to a legitimate employment website, you are taken to an unrelated, basic-looking website , full of pop-up ads and colourful banners. The website’s owner is likely earning money from ad views and clicks. Similar tactics have been employed by other Facebook pages claiming to advertise jobs. You can read our in-depth investigation here . And our guide to Facebook scams and how to spot them will help you avoid being duped. – Africa Check (en)
