‘Pipeline Protesters Out of Gas’ Meme Claim A photograph shows pipeline protesters who ran out of gas on their way to a demonstration. Rating Decontextualized Like this fact check? Reporting On February 17 2020, a Facebook user shared the following post that purports to show pipeline protesters ironically holding an out of gas sign — ironic, because they ran out of fuel on their way to a protest: https://www.facebook.com/PatrioticDad/photos/a.670218749843458/1229125050619489/?type=3&theater Atop three images of a two people, a red late-model SUV marked oil spill, oil kills, and one person holding an out of gas sign, text read: Ran out of gas on the way to the pipeline protest, and now begging for gas. The post appeared against the backdrop of ongoing pipeline protest in Canada, and judging by comments on the post, users inferred the purportedly stranded people indeed ran out of gas on their way to join protesters. A contemporaneous news story reported that protests in Canada continued through early February 2020, and commenters mocked purported participants of that particular protest: An indigenous-led anti-pipeline protest has shut down a vital cross-continent rail line in Canada, disrupting freight and passenger service and costing millions of dollars in lost revenue, officials say. Florida is where wokes go to die... Please enable JavaScript Florida is where wokes go to die The Mohawks of Tyendinaga are protesting the 416-mile, $4.68 billion (6.2 billion Canadian dollars) Coastal GasLink pipeline running from northern British Columbia to a natural gas facility near Kitimat, British Columbia. They’ve used snowplows, barrels and wooden barricades to block the tracks, forcing Canadian National Railway to temporarily close the line. Protests in Ontario have also taken place in support of the indigenous chiefs. The pipeline passes through the traditional territory of the Wet’suwet’en First Nation near Houston, British Columbia, in the Canadian west. However, a reverse image search showed the image was crawled in 2016, nearly four years before the Canadian pipeline protests occurring at the time the Facebook user shared the post. The same photograph appeared in replies to a 2017 news story about the Keystone Dakota Access pipelines (DAPL), and the individuals depicted were claimed to be protesters of that pipeline: https://twitter.com/radarman19/status/823909818465447936 The same images appeared in October 2016 on Reddit’s r/funny , labeled Protester irony: Protester irony. from funny A version was also shared to r/AdviceAnimals on September 12 2016: When you run out of gas on the way to the pipeline protest from AdviceAnimals Of all the iterations we found, the earliest was from September 10 2017 on Imgur . That post’s title claimed the individuals were heading to the Dakota Access Pipeline protests when they ran out of gas: ND Standing Rock pipeline protesters run out of gas on way to protest. However, like the February 2020 Facebook post, no actual proof that the image was accurately labeled was included with the post. Although oil spill, oil kills was written on the vehicle, that didn’t necessarily indicate that the individuals shown were active protesters. A Buick seen on the right side of the image appeared to have North Dakota license plates, and the red SUV was not the only old vehicle seen in the photograph. On early variations of the rumor in 2016, commenters occasionally reported having seen the image shared prior to Dakota Pipeline protests (although we found no older iterations): I saw this picture years ago. This isn’t from the pipeline protest A photograph of protesters who ran out of gas on their way to protest a pipeline was definitively not captured during early 2020 pipeline protests. Although it was a popular meme used to demean DAPL protesters in 2016, it still wasn’t clear if the image was linked to that protest, either. The photographs appeared to be undoctored, but their origin was unknown, as was the individuals’ destination at the time the photograph was captured.
