  • A doctored video with tens of thousands of views on TikTok and Facebook falsely claims to show former US president Barack Obama unveiling a portrait of Indonesian presidential hopeful Anies Baswedan. The video originally shows Obama unveiling a painting of himself at the Smithsonian in 2018. The 38-second video was shared on TikTok here on October 15, 2022, where it has been viewed more than 55,000 times. It appears to show former US president Barack Obama unveiling a giant photo of Anies Baswedan , former governor of the capital Jakarta and a strong contender in Indonesia's 2024 presidential election. Text superimposed on the video reads: 2024 presidential candidate Mr Anies Baswedan / toward a prosperous and religious Indonesia / how about you? The post's caption says: Presidential candidate Anies b -- referring to the politician. Screenshot of the misleading post, taken on October 20, 2022 NasDem Party, a minor Indonesian political party, named Anies its presidential candidate on October 3, 2022, less than two weeks before he ended his term as governor. However, for Anies to officially take part in the election, NasDem needs to form a coalition with other political parties as it currently holds only 10 percent of the parliamentary seats, or half of the threshold required to field a presidential candidate. The same video was also posted on Facebook here , here and here . Many comments from social media users show they believed the video was genuine. God is great, Mr Anies is so famous in America that they also support him by showcasing his photo. Amen, one commented. Another user wrote: Anies is the 2024 president even the world knows it. Handsome, smart, trustworthy. Screenshot of social media users' comments, taken on October 20, 2022 However, the claim is false. Doctored video The footage has been doctored from a video which originally shows Obama unveiling his own portrait at an event held by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington in February 2018. Keyword searches on YouTube found this 20-minute video published by CNN's official YouTube channel on February 12, 2018. It is titled: President Obama's official portrait unveiled. The caption reads: At the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery, former President Barack Obama spoke about parallels between his life and artist Kehinde Wiley. The painting of Obama is revealed at the 30-second mark of the video, after the former US president and Kehinde Wiley , the artist who did the portrait, pulled down the black cloth. Below is a screenshot comparison of the doctored video (left) and the genuine CNN video (right), with the altered and genuine parts marked by AFP: The same event can also be seen in this video published by the Smithsonian's official YouTube channel on February 12, 2018, titled: Obama Portrait Unveiling at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery. The video's description reads: The Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery unveils its commissioned portraits of former President Barack Obama and Mrs. Michelle Obama by artists Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald, respectively. Remarks by President Obama and Mrs. Obama, Smithsonian Secretary David Skorton, National Portrait Gallery Director Kim Sajet and artists Wiley and Sherald. The photo of Anies was taken when he took part in a virtual dialogue between C40 Cities ' mayors and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in April 2021 -- the then Jakarta governor posted the picture on his official Facebook and Twitter accounts. In 2019, AFP previously debunked another doctored version of the video, which was claimed to show Obama unveiling a photo of Indonesia's then presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto. (en)
