Twitter posts claim a video of a roof blowing off a building was taken during Hurricane Ian in the US state of Florida. This is false; the footage shows damage caused by Hurricane Michael in 2018. my dad just sent me this video from Naples Florida Hurricane Ian, says a September 28, 2022 tweet . Screenshot of a tweet taken September 30, 2022 Other posts sharing the video, viewed more than 300,000 times, circulated on Twitter here , here and here and in Spanish-language Facebook posts . Hurricane Ian made landfall as a Category 4 near Cayo Costa, Florida on September 28, 2022. The storm devastated communities along the state's southwest coast, leaving millions without power as US President Joe Biden warned of a high death toll. Although roofs were destroyed during Hurricane Ian, the clip shared online is outdated. It was taken during Hurricane Michael , which hit the Florida panhandle as a rare Category 5 storm in October 2018. A reverse image search indicates the footage comes from the Tornado Trackers , filmmakers who chase and record severe weather events. The group posted the footage on its YouTube channel on October 12, 2018. Video taken in the western eyewall of Cat 5 Hurricane Michael as it slammed Panama City Beach with extreme wind, the caption says. We positioned ourselves safely in a parking garage and watched as the historic Category 5 storm unfolded around us. Gabe Cox, filmmaker and co-founder of Tornado Trackers confirmed that their footage was used without permission. This account ripped off our 2018 Hurricane Michael clip and falsely claimed it as Hurricane Ian, he told AFP. AFP has fact-checked other videos misleadingly linked to Hurricane Ian here and here .
