You may have heard of country hip-hop hybrig musician Lil Nas X who recently gained international fame after his breakout single Old Town Road was released in late 2018. Alas, with stardom comes rumors. Lil Nas X, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, seemingly came out as gay in a Twitter post on June 30, the last day of Pride month. A day later, the website LFR Solutions published a story that claimed Hill was dropped from his Wrangler endorsement because of the reveal. The article, which has attained over 16,700 shares on Facebook since being posted on July 1, was flagged as part of Facebook’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Facebook .) The entire story is made up. At first read, the website appears to post legitimate entertainment news,, but buried at the very bottom of the page in tiny, barely legible writing (3.5 font size to be exact) is a disclaimer that everything on the site is satire: THE STORIES POSTED ON LFRSOLUTIONS.COM ARE FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY. THE STORIES MAY MIMIC ARTICLES FOUND IN THE HEADLINES, BUT REST ASSURED THEY ARE PURELY SATIRICAL. Many readers evidently did not see that text, misinterpreted it as real news and shared the story so often that Wrangler eventually responded to the rumor on Twitter saying that the partnership with Lil Nas X was still in full effect. We’re aware of a fake news article circulating misinformation regarding our apparel collaboration with Lil Nas X and take issues like these very seriously, Wrangler tweeted on July 10. As a company, we support love and diversity wholeheartedly and nothing has changed about our relationship with Lil Nas X. Nope. The Wrangler x Lil Nas X collab is still in full effect.
