  • A Facebook post that claims to show an internal memo announcing the resumption of studies at the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) is circulating in Kenya. According to the document, dated 7 October 2020, all continuing MMUST students are expected to report to school on 13 October 2020 for semester one of the year 2020/2021. Examinations for semester 2 of 2019/2020 will be rescheduled for a later date after consultations from different stakeholders, the memo reads in part. The memo, apparently signed by the Registrar of academic affairs, also asks the students to ensure that they clear the current semester’s fees and any other outstanding balances before reporting back. On 29 September 2020, the cabinet secretary for the ministry of education, George Magoha, announced progressive reopening of universities and other tertiary institutions beginning from 5 October 2020. This memo has had at least 100 reactions but has some grammatical errors which are uncharacteristic of similar official documents sent out by universities. So how legit is this internal memo? MMUST response Masinde Muliro University shared the internal memo announcing the resumption of studies on its official Facebook page, stamped FAKE in red and with the caption FAKE MEMO ALERT!!. MMUST Senate meeting A post on the university’s Facebook page, which is connected to the official university website but not verified, states that the university senate met on 8 October 2020. A notice attached to the post contains information on resumption of face-to-face studies, continuation of online learning, reporting dates for new students, examinations, fee payments and graduation ceremonies. The memo shared on Facebook is not genuine. – Grace Gichuhi (en)
