  • A video of a vehicle colliding with an elephant in a late-night crash has been viewed thousands of times in social media posts that claim it shows an accident involving a Sri Lankan actor in July 2022. However, the footage was actually filmed in Thailand in 2017, when a truck smashed into an elephant near a national park. The video which shows Jackson Anthony's accident, reads a Sinhala-language Facebook post shared on July 5. Jackson Anthony is a popular Sri Lankan actor who was injured in a car crash on July 2 when the vehicle he was travelling in collided with a wild elephant in Thalawa in north-central Sri Lanka. The video shows dashcam footage which captures the moment an elephant walks out into the road and smashes into an oncoming vehicle. Screenshot of the Facebook post captured on July 6, 2022 The same video was viewed thousands of times in similar Facebook posts here and here , and also circulated on WhatsApp, YouTube and a gossip site . Some social media users appeared to believe the footage showed the car accident involving Jackson Anthony. Looks like reckless driving on Jackson's part, one person commented. However, the footage actually shows an accident near Khao Yao National Park in central Thailand in 2017. Thai road accident The video features a logo in the top-left corner for the MailOnline, the website for British tabloid the Daily Mail. A keyword search on Google found a MailOnline article from November 14, 2017 headlined: Junked by a trunk: Truck is written off after smashing into an ELEPHANT in Thailand (but fortunately the animal and driver escape with minor injuries). The first 30 seconds of the video in the MailOnline article correspond to the clip shared on social media. According to the article, the footage shows a vehicle driven by a Thai forestry worker as he was driving through Nakhon Ratchasima province, northeast of Bangkok, with his wife and daughter. Are you OK? A representative for Khao Yao National Park said that the crash happened in November 2017 around 19 kilometres (12 miles) from the park. On November 12, 2017 around 8pm: an incident occurred where a car collided into a wild elephant, on Gudklah road, Pakchong district, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, just outside the national park area, the spokesperson told AFP. Local media covered the smash, including Thai television outlet Channel 3 on November 14, 2017. A video report posted on YouTube on November 14, 2017 is titled: The footage shows the moment a pick-up truck hit an elephant in Khao Yai National Park. The elephant was injured and escaped into the forest. The clip shared in a false context online can be seen in the YouTube clip from the 0:24 mark .
