The National Population Commission has launched its recruitment empowerment portal ahead of 2022/2023 and the about to start trial census, a post circulating on WhatsApp and Facebook in Nigeria claims. According to the 18 July 2022 post , applicants must be Nigerian by birth and above 18 years old, have a valid identity card and a degree from a university or a polytechnic. The post , which was replicated on other Facebook pages here and here , urges job seekers to click a link and apply for available positions. The National Population Commission (NPC) provides data on Nigeria's population by conducting censuses and keeping a registry of births and deaths, and maintains a nationwide mechanism for house numbering. This data is used for national planning and the development of economic policies. But is the commission recruiting through this portal, advertised on social media? We checked. Typical engagement bait The grammatical errors in the posts and on the website itself are signs that it was not written by professionals who would typically handle job recruitments for a government agency. The link included in the post directs to a blog advertising free work visas sponsored by Chevron , an American multinational energy corporation. This is also dubious. After filling in an application form with your personal details, the website instructs you to share the post to 10 WhatsApp groups to receive an interview date. This suggests that the post is an engagement bait scam where people are asked to interact by liking, commenting or sharing with their contact list. The interaction enhances the reach of the post. NPC: No, it's a scam Isiaka Yahaya, the commission's director of public affairs, said the information was false and should be treated as an attempt by fraudsters to swindle job seekers. In a press release dated 18 July, Yahaya said the commission had already recruited 14,461 field officers for a nationwide trial census exercise. The commission is preparing to conduct a census in 2023 after the last census held in 2006 . According to the director, the portal that was used for the recruitment has been shut down and the trial census began on 27 June 2022. The National Population Commission is taking every measure to uncover those behind the fraudulent recruitment site, Yahaya said.
