  • A photo has been shared tens of thousands of times in social media posts in India which claim it shows a Delhi police officer threatening a child with his baton during anti-citizenship law protests in the country’s capital. The claim is false; this photo actually shows a Bangladeshi police officer raising his baton at a child during a protest in Dhaka in 2010. The photo was published here on Facebook on February 26, 2020. It has been shared more than 32,000 times. Below is a screenshot of the misleading post: The Hindi-language caption translates to English as: Delhi Police thrashing someone who is a big terror. Delhi has recently seen its worst sectarian violence in decades. At least 38 people have been killed in recent clashes triggered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's citizenship law, which triggered months of demonstrations. Here is an AFP report about the violence. Delhi Police have been accused of injuring children in the clashes, as reported here by Indian news site Scroll India on December 20, 2019. The photo was also shared here , here and here on Facebook; and here and here on Twitter, alongside a similar claim. The claim is false; this is an AFP photo taken in Bangladesh in 2010. It shows a Bangladeshi police officer threatening a child during clashes in Dhaka , the country’s capital. A Google reverse image search found the photo was published here on the AFP Forum on June 30, 2010. The caption states: A Bangladeshi policeman threatens a child with a baton during clashes with garment workers in Dhaka on June 30, 2010. At least 15,000 protesting garment factory workers blocked key roads in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, the latest in a string of protests over low wages and poor conditions. Police fired tear gas and used water cannons to disperse the workers, who sew clothes for some of the top names in Western retail, after they blocked a major intersection in the north of the city.
