  • As Hollywood superstar Russell Crowe visited Thailand to shoot a film, an image circulated on social media that purported to show him holding a donation envelope for Buddhist monks. But the image -- which was first shared on a satirical website -- has been doctored. The original photo in fact shows Crowe holding a pass for the Bangkok skytrain. The image was shared in this Facebook post on October 25, 2021. It purports to show the Australian actor Russell Crowe holding a white envelope with Thai letters on it, which the post claims is for giving donations to Buddhist temples. The image's Thai-language caption translates to English as: Omg Omg Omg, here comes the donation envelope. He came to our country for film production. He came to promote our country and raise awareness about our country to the world. But why did someone give him a donation envelope!? If you want to give him that, isn't it better to show him what Thai traditions look like???!!? Then he will help with 100 percent of his heart. How embarrassing. Red text superimposed on the image reads: He was the chairman. Chairma n often refers to the person who is widely respected among the donors. Screenshot of the misleading post, captured on October 26, 2021 The post circulated online as Crowe visited Thailand to film his upcoming The Greatest Beer Run Ever , the Bangkok Post reported . Throughout his stay, he frequently posted images from Thailand on Twitter. The image of him appearing to hold a white envelope was also shared on Facebook here , and Twitter here and here alongside a similar claim. Comments on the posts indicate some social media users believed the image was genuine. He must be confused and asked himself why did he have to give out money? one wrote. Another said: He will be given more of these envelopes for sure. However, the image has been doctored. Keyword searches on Google traced the image to this post shared by Facebook page Thailed Online on October 24, 2021. Thailed Online identifies itself as a satirical news outlet on its 'About' section: Screenshot of Thailed Online's information page, taken on October 27, 2021 Its name appears to be a parody of the Thai news website Thairath Online . Further keyword and reverse image searches found the original image published on the official Twitter account of Allan McKinnon , the Australian Ambassador to Thailand, on October 23, 2021. It shows Crowe holding a pass for Bangkok's skytrain. The tweet reads: Lost in Bangkok with @russellcrowe ! Wished him all the best for the upcoming movie shoot. And took the opportunity to give him the Australian Embassy BTS (skytrain) card – this should help him if he gets lost in Bangkok again! Lost in Bangkok with @russellcrowe !
