  • A video of a large fire ripping through shacks in a refugee camp has been viewed thousands of times on Facebook alongside a claim that the blaze was started by the Myanmar military. The video has been shared in a misleading context: it has circulated in reports about a fire that destroyed part of a Rohingya refugee camp in southeastern Bangladesh in March 2021. The fire was an accident that originated from a cooking stove, a fire service spokesman told AFP. The video was shared here on Facebook on March 31, 2021. It has been viewed more than 6,000 times. This is not natural fire. This is all because of this one organisation and the world needs to know that. Min Aung Hlaing, you are not going to have a pretty death. He declared himself prime minister after the military swept Aung San Suu Kyi's democratically elected government from power on February 1, 2021. The report's headline reads: Tens of thousands flee huge blaze at Rohingya camp in Bangladesh. Officials said the latest blaze appeared to have started on Monday in one of the 34 camps -- which span about 8,000 acres (3,237 hectares) of land -- before spreading to three other camps, with refugees fleeing the shanties with whatever belongings they could carry, reads the article published on March 22, 2021. Mohammad Imdadul Hoque, station officer at Ukhia Fire Service Station, told AFP on October 19: It was an accident and the fire originated from a cooking stove of a house in the camp and then spread rapidly due to the presence of more gas cylinders. The video in the misleading posts corresponds with AFP photos here and here of the aftermath of the fire at the refugee camp in Ukhia. (en)
