A message advertising jobs in Canada for more than 450,000 skilled and unskilled workers has been posted on Facebook and WhatsApp in Kenya. It’s headed JOB RECRUITMENT CANADA 2022, and claims that there are over 670,000 jobs available. The message says travel expenses, housing, accommodation and medical expenses are covered under the programme. The skills needed are minimal: applicants must be over 16 and able to speak basic English. It also offers instant work permits and visa application assistance. The message says the opportunity is suitable for students who want to work and study in Canada. But is the offer legit? We checked. Protect your personal information Africa Check searched the Canadian government’s official website but could not find the recruitment offer. We open the link in the message, to a site where people can supposedly apply. But it led to a dodgy and unprofessional-looking website. The site asks for people’s details, such as name, phone number, email, gender, country and region. This could be an attempt to steal valuable personal information . We took the risk and filled the application form with random letters. Despite this, the site led us to the next step. Engagement bait Like many other scam sites Africa Check has debunked before, as soon as we had completed the application we were told to click the invite Friends/Group button and share this information with 15 friends or 5 groups on Whatsapp. Completing this step was the only way to get to the next step, the visa forms button. Posts that ask people to like and share to increase a post’s reach are engagement bait scams.
