An image has been shared repeatedly in multiple Facebook posts that purports to show remarks by a Filipino politician in which he appears to criticise Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. The claim is false; the image has been digitally altered to add a fabricated quote. The original image showed a graphic published by local news organisation Inquirer. The photo was shared in this Facebook post on January 3, 2020. It purports to show a quote by Filipino politician Vico Sotto , mayor of Pasig city in the country’s capital region. A screenshot of the misleading post, taken on January 7, 2021 The photo’s text overlay states: That's a lesson for you that when you vote, the next time you vote for someone who does not curse God and is not a LIAR, not a RAPIST, not a MASS KILLER, not a THIEF. / Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto in a live broadcast on his Facebook page / April 12, 2020. The purported quote appears to suggest that Sotto was criticising Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Duterte previously said that God is stupid, as reported here by the New York Times. An identical photo was also shared alongside a similar claim here , here and here on Facebook. However, the claim is false. Reverse image and keyword searches on Google found the photo was originally published in this April 13, 2020 Inquirer report about Sotto’s remarks on Pasig city’s coronavirus assistance programme. The quote in the original photo reads: All families in need who are not on the (Department of Social Welfare and Development) list will be covered by the local government. Below is a screenshot comparison of the doctored photo in the misleading posts (L) and the Inquirer photo (R): Screenshot comparison Sotto’s April 12, 2020 Facebook live broadcast here , cited in the doctored photo as source, does not contain the purported anti-Duterte remarks. In response to the misleading posts, Sotto issued this January 4, 2021 statement. It reads: It's the new year and there's already a lot of fake news. Please be careful and vigilant on social media. Let us remember how easy it is to create fake news or invent quotes. #fakequotes.
