  • A Facebook post shares a photo it claims shows the national Maritime Museum in India’s financial capital of Mumbai. The claim is false, Mumbai has no Maritime Museum and the photo shows the National Maritime Museum in London. The Facebook post , shares a photograph which it claims shows the National Maritime Museum in Mumbai in the western state of Maharashtra. Screenshot of misleading Facebook post The June 12, 2012 post’s caption says: National Maritime Museum is situated in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The museum conserve the historical assets of India obtained from other countries and models of ships built in Mumbai. A reverse image search found the image was of the National Maritime Museum in London. The verified Facebook page of the National Maritime Museum, London has shared a similar image of the building: Screenshot of official photo The photo of the building claiming to be Mumbai’s Maritime museum was tweeted on August 11, 2017 by an official Twitter account of Maharashtra’s government information centre. As of December 2018, the tweet had still not been deleted. In this screenshot of the tweet, the Union Jack, the national flag of the United Kingdom, can be clearly seen on the top of the building. Screenshot of tweet The image of the London museum has also been used on a Mumbai tourism website alongside a claim it is the National Maritime Museum in Mumbai. Mumbai does not have a Maritime Museum, Indian Navy spokesperson Mehul Karnik told AFP. Indian Navy does not have any Maritime museum and the tweet by the Maharashtra government is definitely wrong, he told AFP. (en)
