The Truth: The New York Post article was published on October 10, 2008 saying that an Ohio man named Freddie Johnson who claimed that he was given cash and cigarettes by aggressive activists from the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) in exchange for registering an astonishing 72 times, in apparent violation of Ohio laws. The article also said that ACORN is under investigation in Ohio and at least eight other states – including Missouri, where the FBI said it’s planning to look into potential voter fraud – for over-the-top efforts to get as many names as possible on the voter rolls regardless of whether a person is registered or eligible. ACORN bills itself as a non-partisan organization that empowers low and moderate income families by assisting them to gain better housing as first time homebuyers and tenants. The group’s political arm officially announced its endorsement of Senator Barack Obama for President in February of 2008. According to its web site, the community-based organization has helped more than 1.7 million low- and moderate-income and minority citizens apply to register to vote since 2004.
