  • An image shared on Facebook purportedly shows a woman shopping while a BBC reporter ducks behind cover during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Verdict: False The image has been taken out of context. The original video shows the woman ducking behind cover while the BBC reporter narrates how Ukrainian civilians are fleeing from the Russians. Fact Check: Russia targeted Ukraine with missiles in the morning of Oct. 10 that hit civilian areas in Kyiv, such as playgrounds and a pedestrian bridge, which Russia claimed was in retaliation to a bombing connecting the country with Crimea, according to Axios . A second wave of strikes occurred in Kyiv Oct. 17, The Associated Press reported. The Facebook image, which shows a BBC reporter taking cover, claims the photo is staged. BBC’s Jeremy Bowen, pretends to be on the frontline, whilst a woman out shopping looks on, seemingly bemused, the image’s caption reads in part. The claim is incorrect. A reverse image search found that the image is from a March 2022 video, showing Ukrainian civilians fleeing from Russian advances in Irpin, a town outside of Kyiv. The Russians took the town in early March before the Ukrainians retook it later that month, according to Reuters . (RELATED: Does This Video Show Russian Equipment Left In Izyum?) At one point in the video, the woman in the pink can be seen crouched behind a barricade while the BBC reporter continues to narrate. She then starts to walk toward the reporter, which is where this screenshot captures. The reporter looks towards her and speaks about the people behind her, mentioning a dog that is not visible in the Facebook image. Misinformation about the Russian-Ukrainian conflict is not new. Check Your Fact recently fact-checked a claim about how much aid the Biden administration had given to Ukraine. (en)
