Nine images have been shared hundreds of times in multiple Facebook posts that claim they show a recent rebel attack in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh that injured several paramilitary forces. But the images have been shared in a misleading context: they have previously circulated online in reports about other rebel attacks in India, while one image actually shows a scene from a Star Wars film. The images were posted here on Facebook on January 15, 2022. The post's Hindi-language caption translates to English in part as: Three personnel were injured in a [Maoist] attack in Chhattisgarh's Kanker on January 14, 2022. They have used targeted [improvised explosive device] blasts. Screenshot of the misleading post Maoist militants -- who say they are fighting for rural people and the poor -- have battled government forces across India since the 1960s. The images circulated online after an IED blast by rebels in Chhattisgarh on January 14, 2022, injuring at least three security personnel, local media reported . The images were also shared here and here on Facebook alongside a similar claim. These images, however, have been shared in a misleading context. Reverse searches found most of them have circulated in reports about other rebel attacks. Different IED blasts The first two images have circulated in reports about another IED blast in the town of Bijapur in Chhattisgarh state in November 2018. The images were tweeted by local news outlet DNA on November 14, 2018. The caption states that five security personnel and a civilian were injured in the attack. Below is a comparison of the images from the misleading post (L) and images tweeted by DNA (R). The images were also published separately in other local media articles about the attack here and here . The third and fourth images have circulated in reports about another Maoist rebel attack in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district. They were originally tweeted by the Indian news agency ANI on January 12, 2021. Below is a comparison of the images in the misleading post (L) and images tweeted by ANI (R). The fifth image has circulated in reports since August 2013 about a Maoist attack on Indian paramilitary forces in Odisha's Koraput district. It was published here by the Associated Press on August 27, 2013. The caption reads: Indian paramilitary soldiers stand near their damaged vehicle after Maoist rebels ambushed their patrol at Koraput district in Odisha state, India, Tuesday, Aug.27, 2013. At least five people died and two others were wounded when the rebels set off a bomb, blowing up their vehicle. Below is a comparison of the image from the misleading post (L) and the image published by AP (R).
