  • A fake ad posted on Facebook in Kenya claims oil and gas company Shell Kenya is looking to hire 150 people per county as it prepares to open at least 10 petrol service stations in all 47 counties in Kenya. Interested candidates are invited to make online applications by filling the required details on the forms created on our official website, it reads . It lists vacancies for station supervisors, pump station attendants, drivers and messengers, technicians, cleaners, security guards, receptionists and more, with salaries. Dated 28 October 2019, the post says the training of shortlisted applicants will begin on 6 November. Clues to a fake The link in the post is not, as it claims, to Shell Kenya’s official website . Instead, the link goes to a page on a site with the URL jobsnestkenya.com . On the page , job seekers are asked to send a registration fee of KSh350 via mobile money platform, M-Pesa to a Mr Boniface, the human resources manager... to cater for processing and filing the applicant’s employment documentation. Real recruiters usually don’t ask people to pay money to apply for a job. ‘Attempt to defraud Kenyans’ Africa Check contacted Shell through Facebook to ask about the ad. That is a deliberate attempt by some individuals to defraud Kenyans, Shell replied. We are not hiring. These job offers are fraudulent and not related to Shell.
