  • A video has been viewed tens of thousands of times online alongside a claim that only Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has offered financial incentives to elite Filipino athletes for winning international competitions. The video circulated online after the Philippines won its first Olympic gold in Tokyo. The claim is false: Filipino athletes who won international competitions were given cash rewards before Duterte's administration. The video was shared on Facebook here on July 27, 2021. It has been viewed more than 45,000 times. It shows Filipino social media personality Jam Magno speaking to the camera. She says: Let me remind you: it is only during the time of Duterte that we created, we created an allotment for every athlete that will win a gold medal. Yes, it was only during Duterte's time, the 10 million pesos [US$ 200,000]. AFP reported on her victory on July 26. Following her historic win, Duterte rewarded Diaz with three million pesos. Previous laws In fact, previous governments in the Philippines have offered cash rewards to elite Filipino athletes if they won major international sporting events. Republic Act No. 9064 -- signed in 2001 under former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo -- offered five million pesos cash incentives to Olympic gold medallists in individual events.
