  • Is popular news anchor Lilian Muli running for Kenya’s senate? What seems to be an election poster shared on Facebook suggests she is campaigning for Machakos county. The seat for the county, which borders Nairobi to the southeast, was left vacant after the death of senator Boniface Mutinda Kabaka on 11 December 2020. The poster claims Muli is standing on the Wiper Democratic Movement ticket. It was shared on 26 December, two days before Kenya’s electoral commission publicly announced that the county would hold a senate by-election on 23 March. Most political parties are yet to announce their candidates for the by-election and there has been no official announcement of Muli as a Wiper Movement candidate. Is the poster legit? We checked. No candidate presented A Wiper Movement party official told Africa Check the poster was fake. The information on the poster is not true, the official said. It is fake. We are yet to present our candidate for the by-election. (en)
