  • Soon after a helicopter crash killed India's top military chief and twelve others on December 8, 2021, an image has been shared in multiple social media and news articles that purport to show the deadly accident. The image, however, has been shared in a false context: it actually shows an Indian army helicopter that was forced to land in Jammu and Kashmir state in October 2019. The image was shared here on Twitter on December 8, 2021. The caption along with the image reads, #BipinRawat This shows the Low level of skills of our pilots. This is not the first time our helicopter crashed. This happens every mounth! One more embarrassing situation for Indian Air Force. A photo of Bipin Rawat , India's first chief of defence staff, was also shared in the Twitter post. Rawat was travelling with his wife and other senior officers in a Russian-made Mi-17 chopper, which crashed near its destination in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on December 8. The crash killed all of the 14 people onboard, including 13 dead on that day and one survivor who died in hospital on December 15. Screenshot of the misleading post taken on December 14, 2021 The image was shared with similar claims here and here on Facebook; here and here on Twitter. It was also posted by several news portals here , here , here and here ; and here by a Turkish news website. However, the image has been shared in a false context. A reverse image search found it was published in October 2019 in several news reports about an incident from the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Indian news outlet NDTV published the same photo in a report on October 24, 2019 with the headline, Army Chopper Force-Lands In J&K's Poonch, All Including Top General Safe. Screenshot of the image published by NDTV taken on December 14, 2021 The photo caption reads: The helicopter force-landed in Jammu's Poonch. Poonch is a district in the Jammu division of Jammu and Kashmir, close to a military control line which separates Indian and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir. Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan since their independence in 1947. For three decades the Indian-administered part has been in the grip of an insurgency that has left tens of thousands dead. In 2019, India abrogated Article 370 of the Indian constitution that gave special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir and limited the power of the Indian parliament to impose laws in the state, apart from matters of defence, foreign affairs and communications. According to the NDTV report, an army helicopter had to be force-landed in Poonch carrying seven army personnel on October 24, 2019. All the crew members were said to be safe. The report also states about one civilian being injured in the crash.
