  • A video showing a woman slapping a man for harassing her on a bus has been shared multiple times on social media alongside claims the footage was shot in India. The claim is false; according to multiple media reports the video was filmed two years ago in Pakistan. The video was shared here on Twitter on October 9, 2021, and has been viewed more than 4,000 times. In the footage, a woman confronts a man who is shown leaning over the back of her seat on the bus. She demands he apologise for touching her inappropriately and slaps him. She can be heard saying: He was constantly touching my back, and asks for the man to be thrown off the bus. The Hindi caption in the misleading post takes a dig at criticism of Hindu nationalist groups following attacks on minorities, especially Muslims and Dalits. It translates to English as: This gentlemanly Haji miyan (an Urdu term for a religious Muslim man) tried to harass a woman sitting in front of him. The foolish woman bashed him in response. The intolerance in this country is really on the rise. The caption goes on to use a derogatory term to refer to Muslims and sarcastically asks for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resignation. Screenshot of the misleading post taken on October 21, 2019 The same video was shared here , here and here on Facebook and; here and here on Twitter. The claim, however, is false. A keyword search on Google found an article published here by Pakistani daily newspaper The Express Tribune on September 26, 2019, titled: Woman confronts harasser on bus to Islamabad; video goes viral. The video clip featured in the report is the same footage used in the misleading posts claiming the incident took place in India. The Express Tribune describes how the woman in the footage had been sexually harassed on a bus from the Pakistani city of Multan to the capital Islamabad. The video was first published by a Facebook user, Zahra Nain, the report adds. Below is a comparison of a screenshot taken by AFP at the 0:17 mark from the video used in one of the misleading posts (L) and an image published by The Express Tribune: Screenshot of the video used in misleading posts (Left) and the video in the article of published by The Express Tribune (Right) for comparison The incident was also reported here by Pakistan newspaper Dawn and here by Pakistan Today on September 27, 2019. Pakistan Today reported that the woman who first published the footage to Facebook was Zahra Nain, a friend of the survivor of the harassment. An AFP search found no traces of an account in that name or the original post showing the footage. Girls.PK, which describes itself as a digital platform for empowering women, shared the video here on Twitter on September 26, 2019. - Sexual Molestation/Assault in all its forms is unacceptable! The best way to deal with these predators is to shame & expose them publicly to make sure they think TWICE before repeating their actions. pic.twitter.com/CUtuNTDDIu — Girls.Pk (@Girlsdotpk) September 26, 2019 AFP also found the video had been posted on several Pakistani social media pages in September 2019.
