  • A video has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times in multiple posts on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube which claim it shows the Pakistani Army destroying the Indian military’s checkpoints in the disputed Kashmir region on August 6, 2019. The claim is false; the video has circulated online since 2017 in reports about a military operation along the Line of Control (LoC) - the de facto border that divides disputed areas in Kashmir between India and Pakistan. The two minutes 22-second video was published in this Facebook post on August 6, 2019. It has been viewed more than 157,000 times. Below is a screenshot of the misleading Facebook post: The post’s caption states: Today Pakistan ?? Army destroyed Indian ?? army's check posts in Kashmir. The video has also been shared here , here , here and here on Facebook with a similar claim. The video has also been shared here on Twitter and here on YouTube with a similar claim. The claim is false; the video has circulated online since 2017 in reports about a military operation along the Line of Control (LoC) -- the de facto border that divides disputed areas in Kashmir between India and Pakistan. A reverse image search on Google using keyframes from the video obtained using video analysis tool InVID found the video in several Indian media reports. It was published here by TV channel India Today on May 8, 2017. Below is a screenshot of the report on the India Today website: The caption underneath the report’s lead photo states: The video shows the Indian Army using anti-tank missiles to destroy Pakistani bunkers at the LoC. Another report about the same video was published here by Indian news channel NDTV on May 8, 2017. The report’s first line states: A widely-circulated video on social media today shows a Pakistani bunker along the Line of Control, the de facto border in Kashmir, being destroyed by an anti-tank guided missile fired by the Indian Army. The same video was included in this report by Indian newspaper Deccan Chronicle on May 8, 2017. The report’s first line states: Srinagar: The Indian troops have destroyed a Pakistani bunker along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir by firing an anti-tank guided missile, shows a video that has gone viral on social media. None of the reports were conclusive about when or precisely where the attack happened. AFP could not independently verify the claim that the footage shows an Indian army attack on Pakistani checkpoints. AFP analysed the video and found evidence that it had been edited together from several pieces of footage. The video’s audio also showed signs of being edited. The footage cuts at several points, including at the 18-second mark, one minute 21 seconds; one minute 30 seconds; one minute 39 seconds; one minute 46 seconds; one minute 58 seconds; and two minutes 9 seconds.
