A video shared on Facebook purports Attorney General Merrick Garland told Louisiana Republican Sen. John Kennedy to wait for revenge. Verdict: False The video’s caption is inaccurate. The almost 11-minute video shows a 2021 Senate Appropriations Committee hearing. Neither Garland nor Kennedy make their respective claims. Fact Check: Garland recently named Jack Smith as a special counsel in cases related to the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot as well as Trump’s case against the federal government, ABC News reported. Garland previously said he wanted all transcripts and other evidence related to the House’s Jan. 6 investigation, according to CNN . The Facebook video purports Garland told Kennedy to wait for revenge after Kennedy questioned him regarding an alleged document from Trump. ‘WAIT FOR RE.VENGE’ Garland cries loud after Kennedy GRILLS him with Trump’s ‘document’ truth, the video’s caption reads. The claim is false. There are no credible news reports suggesting Garland made such a remark. Likewise, the claim is neither mentioned on the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) website nor on its verified social media accounts . Kennedy also has not publicly commented on the purported claim. The almost 11-minute video shows a 2021 Senate Appropriations Committee hearing on Domestic Violent Extremism in America. In the original video, Kennedy questions U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas about a social media post that NBA player LeBron James allegedly made following a police-involved shooting. Kennedy also questions Garland about what the DOJ is doing to remedy violent crime in Chicago. The remainder of the clip shows Mayorkas and Garland being questioned by Democratic Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy. At no point in the hearing does Garland make the purported remark. Kennedy also does not reference the former president or his supposed document.
