  • A video has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times on Twitter and Weibo alongside a claim it shows a young woman who was blackmailed by the family of an elderly person after a fatal traffic accident in Shanghai in 2021. The claim is false: the video has circulated since 2019 in reports about a young woman helping an elderly woman after a traffic accident in China's Anhui province. None of the reports mentioned blackmail was involved. The video was shared in this Twitter post on September 25, 2021. It has been viewed more than 79,000 times. It then cuts to CCTV footage of people rushing to a person's aid after they are seen crashing their motorised tricycle on a pedestrian crossing. The rest of the video alternates between the young woman's interview and the traffic accident. The post claims the young woman was blackmailed by the elderly person's family after helping them at the crossing in Shanghai. Screenshot taken on September 28, 2021, of the misleading Twitter post The post's caption, written in traditional Chinese characters, translates to English as: Recently, a female college student in Shanghai was blackmailed after helping an elderly person. The elderly woman's family not only did not return the 1,000 yuan medical expenses paid in advance by the student, but also blackmailed her for 5,000 yuan. The college student had no choice but to call the police. After the CCTV camera proved her innocence, the student asked the elderly person and their children to compensate 50,000 yuan as a 'spiritual loss' fee. On September 22, a district court in Shanghai decided that she had won the case. Text superimposed on the video shows a similar description of the alleged incident. A voiceover in Mandarin repeats a similar claim. The video was also shared alongside a similar claim on Twitter here and here , as well as on Weibo here , where it has been viewed more than 410,000 times. However, the claim is false. The video actually shows an incident from 2019 in Feixi county , which is located in the eastern Chinese province of Anhui. A microphone showing the logo and the name of a local broadcaster, Feixi BTV Station , can be seen at the beginning of the footage. The young woman's name, Yin Huating, appears around the 15-second mark. A keyword search found this video was posted by Feixi BTV Station on Weibo on August 13, 2019. Parts of the clip correspond with the video in the misleading post. Below are screenshot comparisons of the video in the misleading post (L) and the video posted by Feixi BTV Station (R): Screenshot comparisons of the video in the misleading post (L) and the video posted by Feixi BTV Station (R) The Weibo post contains a caption written in simplified Chinese characters. It translates to English in part as: On the afternoon of August 2, the weather changed suddenly with wind, rain and thunder. A woman in her fifties riding a tricycle overturned at the intersection of Tangkou Road and Sangang Avenue and shed a lot of blood. Yin Huating, who was born after 2000 and is a prospective college student in Feixi county, happened to pass by. Seeing this scene, she ran to the elderly person without hesitation. The situation was urgent at that time, and Yin Huating immediately called the emergency services and sought help from vehicles and pedestrians on the roadside. It was raining heavily at that time, and there was no one to find. Yin Huating felt helpless and cried. The caption goes on to say: The ending of the story is still very touching. Although the woman who fell to the ground died, unfortunately, her family learned that at the last moment, an unknown young girl offered a helping hand. They were very moved and decided to find her. Later when the family thanked her, Yin Huating declined their kindness, saying that as a young person and a college student, when seeing someone in trouble, she couldn't stand by and be an indifferent passer-by. The same incident was also reported by Chinese media outlets in 2019. It was covered by Chinese state news agency China News Service here , and Sichuan province's official media app Sichuan Observation here . None of the articles stated blackmail was involved in the case. (en)
