  • A photo has been shared hundreds of times in multiple Facebook posts that claim it shows an anti-junta protest at the Shwedagon Pagoda, Buddhist Myanmar's most revered holy site, in October 2021. In fact, the image has been doctored from a photo of a protest by railway workers in Myanmar in February 2021. The image was shared in a Facebook post published on October 20, 2021. It has been shared more than 1,900 times. The post claims the photo shows an anti-junta protest outside Yangon's Shwedagon Pagoda to mark the Thadinkyut festival, which is celebrated in Myanmar after Buddhist lent. Anti-junta mass protest at Shwedagon Pagoda on Thadinkyut full moon day, reads the Burmese-language caption. Screenshot taken on October 25, 2021 of the misleading post Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets since the Myanmar military seized power in February, ousting civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and launching a brutal crackdown against the opposition. The image was shared in Facebook posts here , here and here alongside a similar claim. However, the image has been doctored. A reverse image search on Google found the original image of the crowd was taken by AFP in February during an anti-coup protest by railway workers. The image's caption reads: Myanmar's railway staff members take part in a protest demanding the release of detained Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi during a demonstration against the military coup in Yangon on February 19, 2021.
