Massive recruitment for teachers at the federal ministry of education reads the headline of a message circulating on WhatsApp and Facebook in Nigeria in November 2021. In an effort to strengthen the teaching profession for improved service delivery, the office of the head of the civil service of the federation is inviting interested officers within the mainstream federal service, who desire to laterally convert to education officer cadre, to apply , it reads . It lists a number of subjects, which it says applicants are required to have a bachelor’s degree in, and gives a link to a website. But are these vacancies real? We checked. Job vacancy does not exist When Africa Check visited the webpage linked to in the posts, we found scans of a circular supposedly from Nigeria’s federal office of the head of the civil service dated 23 July 2021. But a link on this page, apparently to submit applications, redirects back to the same page. We then went through the websites of Nigeria’s federal ministry of education , federal civil service , and office of the head of civil service , but found no record of recruitment for teachers. No credible news organisations in Nigeria have reported on the recruitment drive, which we would expect if it were true. Posting a non-existing job opening on Facebook is misleading. Ignore messages on social media claiming Nigeria’s federal ministry of education is recruiting in November 2021. For more information on how to avoid job scams on Facebook, read our guide here.
