  • A video has circulated in Twitter and Facebook posts alongside a claim it shows people cheering after the resignation of Gladys Berejiklian -- the former premier of the Australian state of New South Wales. The video, however, has been doctored. Similar memes using the same scene of a jubilant crowd have circulated online since 2016. Seeing the news about the resignation of the 'witch governor' in Australia's NSW State, most Australians celebrated, reads this Twitter post dated October 2, 2021. The video has been viewed more than 10,000 times. It shows a crowd gathered in front of a screen on which former New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian appears to be making a statement. She can be heard saying: Therefore, it pains me to announce that I have no option but to resign the office of Premier. The crowd then bursts into cheers. Berejiklian resigned on October 1 amid a corruption investigation, leaving Sydneysiders -- deep in months of lockdown -- without a political leader. AFP reported on the crisis here . Some online users appeared to believe that the video was filmed after Berejiklian's resignation. One comment reads: The cheers show that they hate this person so much! Another wrote: This is the advantage of democracy. However, the video has been doctored. Google reverse image searches using keyframes extracted from the video found this similar footage published on June 17, 2016.
