  • A photo showing soldiers standing in front of a US military plane has been shared in social media posts claiming that a US military plane landed in Taiwan on June 6, 2021. However, the posts are misleading: while a US military plane genuinely landed in Taiwan that day, the image has circulated online since at least in 2011 and doesn’t show the same plane. The photo was shared here in a tweet posted on June 8, 2021. The post’s caption in traditional Chinese reads: On June 6, 2021, a US military plane landed in Taiwan; On June 6, 1944, the Allied forces landed in Normandy. Screenshot taken on June 11, of the misleading Twitter post The other photo contained in the post depicts the Normandy landing during World War II, captured on June 6, 1944 by Robert F. Sargent. A bipartisan delegation of three United States senators landed in Taiwan on June 6, 2021, at Taipei's Songshan Airport in a US military plane, and announced that Washington would donate 750,000 coronavirus vaccine doses to its ally. The high-profile delegation and gift comes as Taiwan accuses China of hampering its efforts to secure enough doses as part of Beijing's ongoing campaign to keep the island isolated. The photo of soldiers was also shared alongside a similar claim here , here and here on Twitter. The posts, however, are misleading. The photo has circulated online for nearly a decade and doesn’t show the same US military plane which landed in Taiwan on June 6, 2021. A reverse image search on Google found the same photo published here on July 13, 2011, on the official site of US state-owned McConnell Air Force Base. The photo description reads: The 2011 RODEO team from the 22nd Operational Group poses for a picture July 12, 2011, McConnell Air Force Base, Kan. The pilots, navigators and boom operators will compete in the international mobility competition July 24-29 at McChord Field, Joint Base Lewis-McCord, Wash.
