  • An image has been repeatedly shared on Facebook and Twitter purporting to show a meeting where Indian politician Sanjay Raut supposedly served tea to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. But the image has been doctored. The original photograph of the meeting does not show Raut serving tea to Modi; it was digitally altered to insert his image. The doctored image was posted here on Facebook in an account with over 20,000 followers. Sanjay Raut’s heart once again beats for Modi. Today Sanjay Raut said that Modi is the biggest leader of the country. Sanjay Raut is heating tea for Modi, the image’s Hindi-language caption reads. The image circulated online following a June 8, 2021 meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and officials of the Shiv Sena political party -- of which Sanjay Raut is among the leaders, as the Times of India reported . Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party previously governed India’s Maharashtra state in a coalition with Shiv Sena, but the alliance broke up in 2019 due to a power-sharing dispute, AFP reported. An identical image was also shared on Facebook here , here and here ; and on Twitter here . However, the image has been doctored. A reverse image search on TinEye found the original photograph was uploaded here on June 8, 2021 on the official account of the Indian prime minister’s office. The original photo does not show Raut serving tea to Modi. It has been doctored to digitally insert an unrelated image of Raut from this news report in March 2020. Below is a screenshot comparison of the altered image (L) and the original photo (R): The original photo was also uploaded here on June 8, 2021 on the official Twitter account of the office of the chief minister of the Maharashtra state. It has also been shared in multiple news reports here and here . Multiple keyword searches did not find any credible news reports that indicate Raut attended the meeting between Modi and Shiv Sena officials on June 8, 2021. (en)
