Shortly after US President Joe Biden took office on January 20, 2021, an image surfaced online that purported to show a tweet from him thanking Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and referring to him as a world leader. The claim is false; the tweet was published on an imposter account that has since been suspended. The image was published on Facebook here on January 22, 2021. The purported tweet reads: Thank you World leader Mr. Prime Minister @narendramodi. It appeared to be in response to a genuine tweet from Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulating Biden on his inauguration as 46th president of the United States. The Facebook post’s Kannada-language caption translates to English as: World leader Modi. The image of the purported tweet was also published on Facebook here and here and on Twitter here and here . The claim, however, is false. The tweet was posted on a fake Twitter account with the handle @JoeBidenPresid. Biden’s official Twitter handle is @JoeBiden and his official White House handle is @POTUS. The @JoeBidenPresid account has since been suspended by Twitter. Furthermore, a search of Biden’s official accounts found no tweet thanking Modi. AFP has debunked various hoax tweets purportedly sent by Biden's predecessor Donald Trump, including here and here .
