  • A video has been viewed hundreds of times in Twitter, Facebook and Weibo posts that claim it shows a failed vaccination attempt in India as Covid-19 cases surged in the country. But the claim is misleading: the video actually shows a vaccination error in Ecuador. The man in the video has since received a Covid-19 vaccine, according to the government. The video was shared in this Twitter post published on May 7, 2021. The post’s Chinese-language caption translates to English as: That’s how Indian people get vaccinated, [vaccine] price in the black market is 100 USD. Screenshot taken on May 7, 2021, of the misleading Twitter post The 34-second video shows a health worker pricking a man's right arm with a syringe before removing the needle without administering the vaccine dose. The post circulated online as India faced a record surge in Covid-19 infections and deaths. The country has been leading the fight to allow more drugmakers to manufacture vaccines that protect against the disease, AFP reported . An identical video was published multiple times, including here , here and here on Twitter; here , here and here on Facebook; and on Weibo here . The claim, however, is misleading. The video actually shows a failed vaccination attempt in Ecuador, not in India. Keyword searches on Google found this article published by Ecuadorian newspaper El Universo on April 25, 2021. It includes a corresponding image that shows the same person pictured in the misleading posts. Below is a screenshot comparison between the video in the misleading posts (L) and the video published by El Universo (R): Screenshot comparison between the misleading Twitter video (L) and the video published by El Universo (R) The Spanish-language article translates in part as: A video recorded by an elderly man who came this Sunday [April 25] to get vaccinated at the Mucho Lote esplanade, in the north of Guayaquil, was broadcast on social networks in a few minutes, because on the tape you can see how a nurse nails him a needle in the right arm and then withdraws it without injecting the vaccine. Mucho Lote is a neighborhood in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Ecuador’s Ministry of Public Health published a statement on the same issue in an April 25 tweet. Given what happened today at the vaccination point #MuchoLote, we inform the public that the health professional was identified and will be investigated by the relevant authorities, reads the tweet's caption. According to the statement, the man in the video was eventually vaccinated. The ministry issued another statement on the same day, announcing that the case was referred to the State Attorney General in the province of Guayas for investigation. AFP has debunked another misleading claim about a vaccination error here . The same posts were also debunked by Taiwanese fact-checking organisation MyGoPen here . (en)
