  • An image that shows an airport terminal has been shared multiple times in social media posts and news reports about the construction of a new airport in India's Uttar Pradesh state. The airport project is a major infrastructural push for Narendra Modi's government before the upcoming elections in the state in 2022. But the image has been shared in a misleading context; it was previously published on the websites of firms listed online as designers of a new terminal for the Incheon airport in South Korea. The image was shared on Facebook by a page dedicated to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 24. It has been shared over 800 times. Screenshot of the misleading post taken on December 8, 2021 The image had been overlaid with text that reads: PM Modi to perform Bhoomi Pujan of UP's Jewar International Airport. It will target 1 crore footfall every year while boosting tourism in Agra and Mathura. The first flight is expected to take off by January 2024. India is building a new international airport in Jewar , suburbs of Greater Noida, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. Bhoomi pujan refers to a Hindu ritual performed before construction takes place. Local media reported that Modi laid the foundation stone for the construction of the airport -- also known as the Noida International Airport -- on November 25. The airport project is a major infrastructural push for Narendra Modi's government before the upcoming elections in the state in 2022. The image was also shared with a similar claim on Facebook here , here and here ; and on Twitter here and here . Several media organisations also included the image in reports about the Noida airport here , here , here and here . Comments to the posts indicate some social media users thought the image showed Noida airport. The construction speed is unbelievable, one wrote. Absolutely stunning, said another. But multiple reports since at least 2013 state the image shows a model for a new terminal for the Incheon airport, which serves the South Korean capital Seoul. A reverse search on Google found the image was published in this article on the business and technology website Fast Company on October 16, 2013. The image's caption reads: How do you improve on the best airport in the world? That was the question posed to design firm Gensler, which collaborated with the HMGY Consortium to build Incheon International Airport's Terminal 2–a mini-city within an airport containing everything from a koi pond to an entire retail district. Screenshot of the image on the Fast Company article Keyword searches found the image was posted on the website of the global architecture firm Gensler . And identical images were individually posted on the the websites of Heerim , Mooyoung and Youngdo -- firms that along with Gensler are listed online as the HMGY consortium that designed and implemented the Incheon Airport Terminal 2 . The terminal began operations January 2018 . An aerial view of Incheon Terminal 2 on Google Earth shows structures similar to the image in the misleading posts, as seen in screenshot comparison below. Screenshot comparison of the image in the misleading posts (left) with the Google Earth imagery of Incheon Airport (right) Searches on the Noida airport website did not find the image that have circulated in the misleading posts. AFP earlier debunked similar misleading posts that passed off an illustration of the Beijing Daxing airport as Noida. (en)
