  • Multiple posts on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, uploaded in April 2019, have shared a video which has been viewed tens of thousands of times alongside a claim it shows Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi campaigning in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad. The claim is false; the video first appeared online in December 2017 and actually shows Modi after he voted in state elections in the western Indian state of Gujarat. The 30-second video has been viewed more than 11,000 times in this Facebook post published on April 17, 2019. Below is a screenshot of the misleading post: Snapshot of the misleading post The post’s Hindi language caption translates to English as: Owaisi challenged Modi to address a public rally in Hyderabad. Usually, Modi does his rally under security at most places but in Hyderabad, he went on foot to conduct a public roadshow to silence his critics. Owaisi refers to Asaduddin Owaisi, an Indian politician and lawmaker from the city of Hyderabad. This is his official Twitter page. Modi refers to Indian prime minister Narendra Modi. The video was also viewed thousands of times after being shared on Twitter here and on YouTube here with a similar claim. The claim is false; the video first appeared online in 2017 in connection with reports of elections held in the western Indian state of Gujarat. A reverse image search on Google found a similar video to the one included in the misleading posts was uploaded on YouTube here on December 14, 2017. Sabarmati is a locality in the city of Ahmedabad in the western state of Gujarat.
